Their roots span entire regions, their trunks house entire communities, and their luminous leaves cast a perpetual emerald glow across the jungle canopy. To Gaia’s people, the Mammoth Trees are not mere vegetation, they are Gaia’s voice, memory, and lifeblood.

Physical Description

The Mammoth Trees are the largest known living organisms on Gaia. Their trunks can reach 30 meters in diameter, with surfaces so dense that traditional blades cannot pierce them. The bark shifts subtly with light and temperature, covered in moss that glows faintly at night.

The trees’ leaves emit bioluminescent light in hues of green, gold, and occasionally pale blue, depending on their proximity to Gaia’s energy sources. At night, the canopy shimmers like a living sky, guiding travelers through the dense jungle.

Each Mammoth Tree connects to a massive root lattice, a subterranean system pulsing faintly with Gaia’s biotic energy. This network is believed to act as both the planet’s circulatory and neural system, carrying nutrients, electrical impulses, and even memory across vast distances.

The Hollow Trees

Some Mammoth Trees contain hollow cores, vast internal chambers lined with glowing resin and vine-like conduits. These hollows serve as natural sanctuaries, meditation sites, or, in rare cases, focal points of Gaia’s consciousness.

Jade discovers one such Hollow Tree, where Gaia manifests a living weapon within its pulsing heart. The weapon, grown from organic matter and infused with Gaia’s will, marks a pivotal moment in the story: the shift from passive endurance to active defense.

The Hollow Tree symbolizes both birth and remembrance, a place where Gaia stores fragments of her collective memory.

Ecological Role

The Mammoth Trees form the structural and energetic foundation of Gaia’s jungles. Their canopy regulates humidity and temperature, while their roots purify groundwater and channel nutrients back into the ecosystem.

When one Mammoth Tree dies or is burned, others in the network react, shifting their energy patterns in mourning. Elder Marek refers to this phenomenon as “the Echo of Roots,” describing how the trees resonate in shared pain.

Even after death, the trees’ roots continue to hum faintly for years, as if their lifeforce lingers within Gaia’s soil.

Spiritual Significance

For Gaia’s tribes, the Mammoth Trees are the holiest of beings. They are often described as “the pillars that hold the sky” and are seen as living intermediaries between mortal life and Gaia herself.

Rituals are conducted beneath their roots, birth ceremonies, healing chants, and funerals, each act framed as a return to Gaia’s embrace. The people believe that their ancestors’ spirits travel through the root network, merging with the trees to become one with the planet.

Elder Marek teaches that each Mammoth Tree “remembers every breath, every whisper, every drop of blood returned to Gaia.” To harm one is considered a spiritual desecration equal to killing a god.

The Laia’s Exploitation

The Laia invaders view the Mammoth Trees as valuable biomass and energy sources. Their extraction machines strip bark for bioluminescent compounds, while industrial drills tunnel into their roots to harvest nutrient fluids.

These actions have triggered ecological collapse across the outer jungles. When the Laia burned the village of Kareth, multiple trees were destroyed, their deaths echoing through Gaia’s network. This event,the Fall of Kareth,is one of the catalysts for Gaia’s awakening.
